Locate Tension


Day 1 Overview:

When faced with stress, every athlete develops tension. Tension impacts the efficiency of our movement, quality of breath and ability to maintain faster pace for longer periods of time. Tension arises when we’re running at a fast pace, under perceived pressure and when fatigued. Most athletes tension is stored in the following places:

  • Neck & Jaw

  • Shoulders & Shoulder Blades

  • Lower arms and hands

Simple Step to Identify Tension

Our first step is to locate where YOU store tension. We’re going to use todays session focus to develop clarity on where and when you begin to store tension. Here’s how we’re going to do it:

  1. Do you already feel tension clearly in one of the places mentioned above?

  2. Video yourself running the reps below and see if the footage matches what you’re already aware of.

  3. Be clear on where your point of tension is before tomorrows.

Today’s Session Focus

Today complete the following session (ideally with someone filming the main part of the session:

  • 5-minute Warm Up Jog

  • Stretch

  • 4-times 80m Strides @ 80% max pace

  • 3-times 150m with a 60 second recovery between sets - rep 1 @ 50% of max pace, rep 2 & 80% of max pace and rep 3 @ 100% max pace.

  • 5-minute Cool Down Jog
