Who Was Steve Prefontaine?

Steve Prefontaine, also known as Pre, was an American long-distance runner who captured the hearts of the running community in the 1970s. Born in 1951 in Oregon, Prefontaine quickly became a standout athlete in high school and continued his success at the University of Oregon.

Prefontaine's signature racing style was aggressive and fearless, always pushing the pace and daring his competitors to keep up. He became known for his incredible finishing kick, often coming from behind in the final lap to secure victory.

Prefontaine was a vocal advocate for the rights of amateur athletes, pushing back against the amateurism rules that prevented them from earning a living through their sport. He famously challenged the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) and helped pave the way for professional running in the United States.

Tragically, Prefontaine's life was cut short in 1975 when he died in a car accident at the age of 24. His legacy, however, lives on in the sport of running.

Prefontaine's tenacity, competitive spirit, and unwavering commitment to his sport continue to inspire runners of all levels. He set numerous American records during his career, and his untimely death sparked a movement to honor his memory and continue his work in supporting amateur athletes.

Today, the Prefontaine Classic, held annually in Oregon, is one of the most prestigious track and field events in the world, attracting top athletes from around the globe.

Steve Prefontaine will always be remembered as one of the greatest runners in American history and a true inspiration to anyone who laces up their shoes and hits the road or track.
